He is a past president of the Leo Baeck Temple, which is associated with the Reform Jewish movement in the United States. He is also past president of the American Jewish Committee and the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs. Life and career Proskauer was born in 1932 to a Jewish family in Boston, Massachusetts. He attended Harvard University and then served in the United States Army. After graduating from law school at Boston College, he practiced law with his father, who became a judge of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court in 1955. John Proskauer was also the only attorney invited by the state of Israel to give its first legal opinion on the legality of an Israeli nuclear weapons program. He was elected the sixth president of the Leo Baeck Temple in 1984, succeeding Myron Cohen. He was the first American leader of the synagogue to speak at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in May 1993, upon its opening. Proskauer was appointed by President Clinton to the Commission on White House Fellowships in 1996, serving in 1998. He was the first American appointed to the Foundation Board of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. In 1999, John Proskauer, became the first American board member elected to the World Jewish Congress, the world's foremost Jewish human rights organization. He died November 4, 1999 from congestive heart failure at his home in Boston, Massachusetts. Publications My Father, Judge Edward J.
